The Advance Reservation Period, explained
The ARP is how far ahead of departure you may reserve a berth. It is the single rule that decides whether today is the day you should be refreshing IRCTC at eight in the morning.
The rule in one line
You can book 60 days ahead, excluding the date of journey, and the window opens at 08:00 AM IST.
The exclusion matters more than people expect. If your train leaves on 1 November 2026, the window opens on 2 September 2026, not the day after. Counting inclusively is the most common reason someone arrives a day late and finds the good berths gone.
What changed on 1 November 2024
Until 31 October 2024 the ARP was 120 days. Indian Railways cut it to 60 days with effect from 1 November 2024, citing a rising no-show trend and a desire to favour passengers with firm travel plans over speculative bookings made four months out.
Two things were explicitly preserved. Bookings already made under the 120-day rule before 31 October 2024 stayed valid, and the 365-day window for foreign tourists booking under the Foreign Tourist quota was left untouched.
The windows in force

Trains that do not follow 60 days
A handful of day-time intercity express services were exempted from the cut and keep a shorter notified window. The Taj Express and Gomti Express are the examples named in the official announcement. Special and seasonal services are also notified individually, and some carry 30, 15 or 10-day windows.
The practical takeaway is simple: 60 days is the right assumption for almost every mail and express train, but if you are booking a short-distance day train, check that specific train rather than trusting the general rule.
What the ARP does not control
- Tatkal. It runs on its own clock, one day before travel at 10:00 AM for AC and 11:00 AM for non-AC. See the Tatkal timing page.
- Chart preparation. The first chart is prepared a few hours before departure. Booking stays open until then, so a missed opening day is not the end of the attempt.
- Cancellation. What you get back depends on how close to departure you cancel, not on how early you booked. See the cancellation charges guide.
How to use the window well
Treat the opening date as an appointment rather than a deadline. On popular routes and around festival dates, the difference between booking at 08:00 and 08:20 is often the difference between a confirmed lower berth and a waitlist. On ordinary routes and ordinary dates, the same window is open for weeks and there is no rush at all. Knowing which of the two you are in is most of the skill.

A few day-time intercity express trains, such as the Taj Express and Gomti Express, keep a shorter advance reservation period. Some special and seasonal services are notified with 30, 15 or 10-day windows. Always check the specific train before assuming 60 days.
When does Tatkal booking open?
One day before the date of journey, excluding the journey date. AC classes open at 10:00 AM IST and non-AC classes at 11:00 AM IST. For a journey on 15 October, AC Tatkal opens at 10:00 AM on 14 October.
Do I need Aadhaar to book Tatkal tickets?
Yes for online booking. Since 1 July 2025 only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and app, and from 15 July 2025 an Aadhaar-linked OTP is required for Tatkal tickets booked at PRS counters and through authorised agents.
Can travel agents book Tatkal the moment it opens?
No. Authorised agents are barred from booking opening-day Tatkal for the first 30 minutes: 10:00 to 10:30 AM for AC classes and 11:00 to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes.
What happens if I miss the 08:00 AM opening?
Nothing is lost automatically, but popular routes can move to waitlist within minutes. Set a reminder for a few minutes before the window opens, keep your passenger list saved in your IRCTC master list, and have payment ready.
